The 2002 Bristle Beach Fishkin Derby Results
( aka The Billy Fredrick Show )
Russ Layton Captures the First Annual Bristle Beach Fishing Derby.
Fishermen gathered from all across South Dakota to participate in The First Annual Bristle Beach Fishing Derby. This newly-created annual event got underway Friday April 12, 2002, with an evening social & deck party which overlooked the calm waters of beautiful Lake Byron. The derby started Saturday morning at 8:00am and ran until late afternoon. It included any & all neighboring waters in the Lake Byron area.
By noon, Russ Layton of Huron had already produced over 16 lbs of freshwater fish and Lyle of Lake Lyle was sitting safely in second place with 7+ lbs. Unfortunatly, a few anglers remained skinless - poor them. After a terrific lunch and a short story swapping session, anglers ventured out in pursuit of even more of the aquatic creatures (fish). The afternoon shoot was not as productive, as anglers only produced a shameful 3.5 oz of fish. But on the good side, this dry afternoon gave Russ Layton the honor of becoming the first to capture the title ( and cash ) of this prestigious event - congratulations Russ! And just to show what a sportsman Russ is, he donated the entire purse back to next year's festivities ( hopefully hats er shirts ).
